You’re worried about the size of your penis, and you’ve done some research.
You’ve found out that penis extenders are the only penis enlargement equipment clinically proven to change the size (and even shape) of a penis when properly used.
But what is a penis extender, exactly?
A penis extender, also known as a penis stretcher or penile traction device, is a piece of medical equipment that stretches the penis, making it larger over time.
Doctors have used them for decades now to treat men with micropenises, and penises misshapen by injury and genetic disorders. And you can use one to add inches to your unit.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is a Penis Extender: The Basics
A penis extender is a device you put your penis into that pulls on it while you wear it, keeping it stretched for an extended period of time. After enough usage, your stretched tissues settle into that stretched size, enlarging your penis.
There are two kinds of penis extenders:
- Rod & Spring Extenders. These contraptions are like a cage you put on your penis. You lock it in place, then use a set of rods and springs to exert pressure on your penis just behind the glans.
- Pulling Extenders. These loop over the head of your penis, and attach to an elastic belt, which you cinch to provide the pulling pressure to make it work.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages, most of which boil down to personal preference and comfort. But both use the same physiology to make your penis larger.
For the record, most clinical studies that found results from using a penis extender used a Rod & Spring model.
What is a Penis Extender: How it Works
The core physiological process behind penis extenders is cell hyperplasia.
This is when tissues in your body are stretched for an increased period of time, and as a response the cells split and duplicate themselves.
Your body did it all the time when you were growing, which is why you’re taller than you were at age 7.
It’s the process responsible for stretch marks, and it works as well with the tissue in your penis as it does with the skin on your belly.
Thing is, after adolescence your tissues won’t undergo hyperplasia naturally, on their own. They need stimulus from you.
With those belly stretch marks, it’s a matter of too many cheesburgers and beers. With your penis, you need a long-term, consistent routine of pulling on the tissues until hyperplasia sets in.
Like when you put your penis in a device that keeps the tissue extended for hours each day.
What is a Penis Extender: How Much Do They Cost?
There’s a pretty wide range of prices out there, depending on brand, type, and features. Many come with some kind of guarantee for men who don’t get results:
Sure, spending $200 to $350 on making your penis larger may seem like a lot — but compare it to how much women spend every month on the beauty products that keep us interested in them.
Put in that context, it’s a relatively small investment that will pay big dividends over time.
What is a Penis Extender: Expected Results
I mentioned earlier that penis extenders are the only penis enlargement method repeatedly proven to work in clinical trials. For example:
- In a 2005 Shanghai study, men wearing an extender nine hours per day saw growth of approximately one inch after three months (source).
- In 2009, a Turin, Italy study found average growth of just over an inch after six months, along with increaed erectile function, with subjects wearing a penis extender for 4-6 hours daily (source).
- In 2010, researchers in Tehran, Iran found growth of ¾ inch in just one month, extending to over an inch after three months of wearing the extender for 9 hours per day (source).
- An aggressive 1998 study had men wear an extender 12 hours per day for six months. The average increase was more than 3 inches by the end of the study.
“Your mileage may vary,” as they say, and I wouldn’t expect the type of results seen in this last study, as very few men have the time to wear an extender 12 hours a day for 6 months.
But if you use a penis extender properly you can expect results along the lines of what happened in the other studies.
Some men experience much faster, much larger gains, but don’t set yourself up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations.
What is a Penis Extender: Risks and Warnings
Using a penis extender isn’t just the penis extension method most supported by medical research. It’s also one of the safest, compared to long-term cock ring use or stretching your penis with weights.
But it is an exercise regimen. Like all exercise regimens, there are risks if you overtrain or train incorrectly.
For using a penis extender, those risks fall into two broad territories.
Loss of Circulation. For either kind of penis extender to grip your penis firmly enough to stretch it, it also has to grip it firmly enough to reduce blood flow. If that goes on for too long, it can cause tissue damage up to and including something called necrosis (where the skin in your penis actually dies).
That sounds scary, but it’s easy to avoid. About once an hour, let your penis out and massage it gently to restore blood flow, then reattach the extender in a slightly different position. Stop using it for a while if you experience numbness or tingling. And never, ever sleep with it on.
Overtraining. You can overtrain your penis tissues just like you can overtrain muscles, leading to reduced gains and even backsliding. It’s not life- or health-threatening, but it does defeat the purpose of using an extender in the first place.
Avoid overtraining by keeping an eye on your erection quality. If you start losing stiffness, or start taking longer to get hard, that’s a sign. Take a week off and let yourself recover.
This article doesn’t provide all the answers about penis extenders, but we did cover some of the most important.
